CHAPTER ELEVEN

Cora opened her eyes and stretched her arms above her head.

She checked her watch. 8:30. Cora jumped out of bed and dressed in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Babs would be wondering where she was. Toby would’ve been up for ages and was probably running her ragged. He was a bundle of energy in the mornings and no matter how kind they were looking after him, she still felt bad about leaving him for so long.

The smell of bacon and fresh coffee hit her long before she opened the back door of the big house. Laughter came from the kitchen. It sounded as though Toby was entertaining someone. A smile rose on her lips. She’d missed him.

“Hey, everyone. Sorry I slept in.” Cora grabbed Toby from behind and smothered his cheek in kisses. “Good morning, sunshine.”

He giggled and wriggled out of her arms. “Stop that.”

She kissed him more. “No way. I have my goodnight kisses to make up for.” She planted a firm kiss on his forehead before letting him go. “You behaving yourself?”

Babs laughed and placed a mug of steaming coffee on the kitchen island counter for her. “This young man is so well behaved, you don’t have to worry about a thing.”

“I appreciate it. Thank you.”

“This man, on the other hand, is desperate for your company.” Duke patted the seat beside him. “I can’t begin to tell you how much I miss going into the restaurant. Fill me in. What happened last night? Any issues with orders? What was the nights takings? Any problems with customers or staff?”

“Duke, it’s been one day and not even a full one at that.” She took the seat and reached for her coffee. That first sip was magical. It energized her as it tickled down her throat and into her belly. A hot coffee, a decent night’s sleep, and time when she’d been at work and she wasn’t worried about her son – how perfect. There were no issues with the day care. No last minute calls because the after-hours sitter had to leave early. That made all the difference.

She sighed as the caffeine hit her bloodstream and put down the mug.

“You look like you just won the lottery.” Babs placed a plate of French toast with a side of mushrooms and bacon in front of her.

Cora’s heart melted just a little bit more. “You don’t have to feed me.”

Babs waved a hand. “Oh, sugar, when’re you gonna realize that’s what I like to do? Don’t want to go upsetting an old lady do you?”

Cora laughed. “Old, you aren’t. And I really do appreciate it. I was just thinking when I walked in that this was the first time I’ve worked nights without having to stress over what was happening on the home front.” She nodded in her son’s direction. “It makes all the difference and I don’t know how to thank you.”

Duke put a hand on her arm and squeezed. “Just so you know, works both ways.”

She snorted. “You’re kidding me? You’re panicking thinking about what you missed out on.
